Journal Entry 19

1)    It was my junior year in high school. Sitting in the middle of my government class, my teacher asked everyone that has a dog to name the type of breed it is. As I thought to myself, someone will probably have a negative comment about the type of breed my dog is, as so many people do. Surrounded by my friends and classmate it was my turn to announce to the class on what type of dog I had. "I have a American Pit Bull Terrier". My teacher looks at me in the face and says "when I was a child my neighbor was killed at only the age of 4 because of a pit bull. No matter what people say pit bulls usually always turn against their owners." Then the whole class had to say their negative comments and ask stupid question like "why do you a dog like that," "do you know they can kill people." I am so overwhelmed that this has just turned into a negative conversation. Also I feel that my classmate are judging me because of the breed of my dog. The comments are so disrespectful because they don't know my dog or how it acts, its my choice that I have this dog. If you have a negative or disrespectful opinion don't say it at all.

My teacher then tells the class "when I was a child my neighbor who was only 4 years old was killed by their pit bull but not all pit bull are the same." After that the rest of the class went on and announced what type of dogs they had. I am so glad that no one made any negative comments and that my teacher respected me enough to say that not all pit bulls are the same.
